***Trigger warning.
***These songs are sad songs and could make you cry.
I listen to these songs mostly at night. I spend the entirety of the day listening to hip hop and Afro beats. I want to say it’s an alter ego feature but maybe I just like the feel of these songs and the darkness allows me to enjoy it more. Typically I like the lyrics of most of these songs. The empathy that comes with listening to it. I often get inspiration from listening to some of it. It allows me to sink in deep into my feelings. Something like that. Well, I seldom cry to these songs because I’m a softie behind all this hard girl act.

House with no mirrors- Sasha Alex Sloan
I love this song because it takes this in-depth look into the writer’s insecurity and fears. It is a projection of how most of us would have been more comfortable and confident if we could be above our insecurities and fears. A lot of fun and the good life we abandoned just because we felt “out of place”. It’s a good listen to when I need to boost my morale.
If I could - Ashley Kutcher
This song is so spectacular because it’s a song that generally goes through my mind whenever my brother or friends tell me about things they’re going through and somehow I’m unable to do anything about it. To be frank, whenever this song plays, I’m recounting every single thing I couldn’t solve for the people I love because I never want these people to go through any iota of pain so if I could…
Breathe again - Joy Oladokun
Took me like three listens before I got what this song meant. Or maybe it wasn’t something I could relate to at first but later got a hang of it. This song is on my positivity playlist but I also listen to it at night. It’s a depiction of how we forget to take a breather and let life flow. We wallow so much in our past mistakes and wrongdoing against other people that we don’t let ourselves breathe. It’s a song I enjoy because I hold myself responsible a lot, sometimes forgetting I’m human and I could just breathe and start over.
My Oh My - James Smith
This song is one you will relate to if you’re going through any type of loss. The writer dives into how we feel after losing someone so dear to us. The self-guilt and continuous self-blame. All the rhetorical questions we keep asking ourselves because we always wish that the best people stay in our lives forever and it’s so impossible. The pertinence of this song for anyone going through a heartbreak is something worth listening to it for. Well, I don’t listen to this song a lot but when I do, it gets me in my feelings about people who use to be in my everyday life but aren’t anymore.
Unbreak - Camylio
The first 6 lines of the lyrics of this song always get to me like the writer knew me and he was speaking to me. It’s a love song about how the writer wants to be there for that one person, but the first lines did not even make it sound like that. It sounded like things you could say to someone who is trying to fake perfection and healing. Someone who is trying so hard to hide the brokenness from the world. Overall, it made it to my 3 am playlist.
Be alright - Jean Lewis
You’ll always catch me listening to Jean Lewis at night for good reasons, his song just gets me. Be alright is a heartbreaking song of a conversation between someone who got his heartbroken and the person who broke it. The song talks about secrecy, lies, and betrayal. Then it referred to how difficult it is to move on too. The “it’s never easy to walk away” part. He then added that “nothing heals the past like time”. A song that just shows that no matter how heartbroken you are, you’ll be alright.
Hopeless Romantic - Sam Fischer
This man knows me, I’m sure. If not, how could he define me so well? I always find it hard to see things and people for who they are. I will keep thinking of them just how I intend for them to be. He kept saying the “I’ve got a heart of a hopeless romantic”. Whenever I listen, I always shout “yes! Me too!”. I just like the empathy I feel listening to this song. It made it to my 3 am playlist because asides from that, it doesn’t entirely fit the kind of songs you’ll find in the playlist.
Always pray for you - Nosa
This song is as old as I can remember but I always carry it with me. It’s a prayer parting song but then it has amazing lyrics. It shows that no matter how much distance is between you and the person you care for, your heart will always long for them and you will always say a prayer for them. It’s just a really beautiful song. A 10/10.
Lonely - Noah Cyrus
I removed this song from this playlist when I was suicidal but I added it back again because it just describes so many things all at once. A lot of us are lonely inside. We do things to distract ourselves and make us feel normal but at the end of the day, we are still our lonely selves. We can not help to fit in because we don’t even really know ourselves. It’s a song for a cry for help out of the loneliness of the writer’s mind. A cry for help a lot of us could relate to.
Past life - Trevor Daniel and Selena Gomez
This song is the first song on my playlist. It always reminds me of my “new me” journey. A journey into being the better person I have decided to be. This song depicts the fact that we should let go of our past and do better than who we used to be but we shouldn’t forget everything we have been through to get us to where we are at. Also something in between an apology and promise to do better to all of the people that got hurt while you were on the journey to self-discovery. Overall, a song that reminds you to move on and do better with your life.
I have a lot of songs on my playlist, I wish I could share and talk about every single one of them but I can’t. I randomly picked these songs. I’m sure there are ones I like more than these but didn’t make it to the list maybe a part two will suffice for those.
Until then, thank you for reading this piece, I hope you like it and I hope you check out these songs in your free time. Don’t forget to like, comment and share. Thank you so much. I wish you a HAPPY NEW MONTH and have a prosperous time.
